Logistics Infrastructure Breakthrough: Lach Huyen Attracts Nearly $1 Billion in Port Investments

Lach Huyen deep-water port in Hai Phong is emerging as a logistics hub in Northern Vietnam, attracting nearly $1 billion in investment for new container terminals. This strategic development is set to strengthen Vietnam’s maritime transport capacity, cut logistics costs, and enable direct exports to the U.S. and EU without regional transshipment.

Overview of Nearly $1 Billion Investment in Lach Huyen

  • Terminals 3 & 4: Invested by Hai Phong Port JSC with ~$300 million, capable of handling vessels up to 100,000 DWT and 1.1–1.5 million TEUs annually.

  • Terminals 5 & 6: Developed by HATECO Group with ~$280 million, accommodating 8,000–10,000 TEU ships.

  • Terminals 7 & 8: A joint venture between Saigon Newport Corporation and CMA CGM, with ~$492 million, designed for 12,000–18,000 TEU vessels and an annual capacity of about 1.9 million TEUs.

This nearly $1 billion investment positions Lach Huyen as a world-class gateway port for Vietnam.

Strategic Significance for Vietnam’s Export Growth

  • Direct connectivity to the U.S. and EU: New terminals capable of hosting 12,000–18,000 TEU mother vessels will shorten transit times and reduce costs.

  • Enhanced capacity: When fully operational, Lach Huyen’s throughput is expected to reach 3.5 million TEUs annually, significantly boosting Northern Vietnam’s logistics infrastructure.

  • Smart and green port model: Automation and eco-friendly solutions enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.

Future Development Plans (2025–2030)

The government has approved the construction of Terminals 9–12 with an additional ~$1 billion investment, a total quay length of 1,800 meters for vessels up to 18,000 TEUs, scheduled to be operational from 2025–2027. Lach Huyen is on track to become a premier logistics hub serving Vietnam’s large-scale export needs.
